Micah Fisher-Kirshner,
a second-grader at Fremont's Weibel Elementary School, was recently awarded the first Northern California Chess Association Scholarship. The NCAA, an affiliate of the United states Chess Federation, provided two junior chess players (under 21) with $100 grants. The NCAA found Micah to be the most deserving of financial support for his chess accomplishments and demonstrated talent for the game.
As of Jan. 1, Micah, the 1989 California State Primary School Chess champion, ranked first in California and fifth in the United States in the 8-year-old-and-under category. Micah is also a member of the fledgling Fremont Chess Club. The club meets each Wednesday night at the main branch of the Fremont Public Library.
