Checkmate for Fremont girls:

Twenty-six Fremont girls competed in the Sojourner Truth Chess Tournament for Girls in Menlo Park on Jan. 8 and 9.

In the first-grade division, Ankita Roy of Weibel Elementary School took second place. Anisha Babbar of Weibel took third.

Sharon Tseung of Weibel won the fourthgrade division, going undefeated in five games. Tied for third place were Diane Wang, Vanessa Wong, Jessica Hsueh, Patricia Jang, all of Weibel and Katherine Wong of Chadbourne Elementary School.

The other girls who participated were: Weibel students Sarah Wong, Erica Wong, Vivian Fan, Eunice Tsai, Isabel Tseng, Geetha Ratnam, Angela Yang, Shrestha Singh, Twisha Buch, Grace Lin, Christine Hsueh, Rebecca Wong, Victoria Jang and Christine Chen.

Also participating were: Hopkins Junior High School students Amanda Miura, Kavitha Ratnam, Shilpam Singh and Amy Wang. Jayodita Sanghvi, a ninth-grader at Mission San Jose High School, also participated.
