Checkmates
Brothers Tov and Micah Fisher-Kirshner are a coupleof tough
kids to beat . . . especially if the "battle" is played out over the chess
board. The both, both students at Weibel Elementary School, brought back batches
of honors from the National Elementary School Chess Championship held two weeks ago
in Charlotte, N.C.
Proud papa Alan Kirshner, a history professor at Ohlone College, says that the games
involved kids from kindergarten through fifth grade from all over the country. Both
boys brought home trophies for their prowess in single games while Tov and his pal
Jeff Magid from Massachusettsranked 11th in team chess and Micah and his chess mate
William Surlow checkmated enough games to rack up a national first place.
