While the CalChess State Championships are open to any scholastic player, the title champion can only be awarded to someone who resides in
Northern California as defined by the US Chess Federation. Following the US Chess Scholastic Guidelines, CalChess only awards the
championship title to individuals and teams competing in the open(championship) divisions .
